USRA’s STEMaction Center hosted the Maryland and DC FIRST Tech Challenge Championship tournament on Sunday March 3rd, 2019 at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County. This event was attended by 52 teams of middle and high school robotics students from Maryland, DC, and beyond that competed for spots at the nine regional qualifying competitions USRA facilitated from western Maryland all the way to the eastern shore in the months preceding the championship tournament. From this cohort of teams that advanced to the regional championship, eight Maryland teams will be representing the region at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit in late April.
In addition to the excitement and energy brought by the middle and high school participants, 24 groups of elementary age student brought their own miniature robotic models and research projects to share as part of the FIRST LEGO League Junior program. This event would not have been possible without the support of over 130 volunteers, dedicated USRA staff, and our partnering organizations. As the regional program partner for FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST LEGO League Junior, USRA STEMaction is eagerly anticipating another successful robotics season for our student participants in 2019-2020.
